Thanks to some crafty work by a handful of producers, Margaret River Shiraz is coming out of the shadow of Cabernet. Cape Mentelle has pushed the envelope with this intense number. Rich, peppery black fruit and a confident use of vanillin oak.
David Hohnen and his brothers Mark and Giles established Cape Mentelle Vineyards in 1970. They were true wine industry pioneers, establishing the first commercial planting of zinfandel in Western Australia, but it was their cabernet sauvignon that cemented their reputation as a premium winemaker. Throughout the 70s, they experimented with different varietals, and in 1983 they went on to win the Jimmy Watson Memorial Trophy for Best Dry Red Wine and repeated the win in 1984. Today, their fresh, vibrant and stylish wines have became become a Cape Mentelle signature.
